Human beings are cognitively inclined to defer to the consensus of a trusted in-group, a tendency grounded in the reasonable recognition that coordinated expert opinion usually reflects accumulated evidence and peer correction rather than individual bias. The device also exploits the division of epistemic labour: because no single person can master every discipline, audiences are rationally dependent on communities of specialists and find comfort in knowing that many such specialists agree. When the consensus figure is quantified — as in a cited percentage — it further activates the persuasive power of statistical proof, lending the appeal a veneer of precision.

A barrister arguing for a change in sentencing guidelines might cite the consensus position of the British Psychological Society — that short custodial sentences increase rather than reduce reoffending — in order to ground a reformist proposal in collective expert judgement rather than personal advocacy.
Identify the relevant professional body or research community and be precise about the scope and degree of the agreement you are claiming, since overstating consensus is both dishonest and easily rebutted. Where possible, cite a named institution, a peer-reviewed survey of expert opinion, or a published statement endorsed by a professional organisation, so that the audience can verify the claim independently. Acknowledge any meaningful minority dissent within the field rather than suppressing it, as doing so actually strengthens your credibility by showing that you understand the landscape of expert opinion honestly.
