High-Stakes Boardroom Persuasion

Overview

Influencing Decisions at the Highest Level: Strategy, Evidence and the Architecture of Consent

Boards do not simply receive information and reach rational conclusions. They are complex social systems shaped by power, identity, deference, cognitive bias and time pressure. For a senior leader seeking to influence a consequential board decision, understanding that system is as important as commanding the technical facts. This masterclass examines the architecture of high-stakes boardroom persuasion: how credible cases are constructed, how scepticism is anticipated and disarmed, how timing and framing shape outcomes, and how the conditions for groupthink are recognised and interrupted. Drawing on the Royal Bank of Scotland board's handling of the ABN AMRO acquisition in 2007, participants will analyse a documented instance of catastrophic collective decision-making at the highest corporate level. The masterclass introduces the BWGELA CASE framework, a structured approach to constructing board-level arguments that are simultaneously rigorous, credible and persuasive. Participants leave with a personal action plan, a reusable presentation architecture and a sharper understanding of the psychological dynamics that determine whether a well-reasoned proposal succeeds or fails in the boardroom.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • 01Analyse the structural and psychological conditions that enable or distort high-quality boardroom decision-making, using documented corporate cases as evidence.
  • 02Apply the BWGELA CASE framework to construct board-level proposals that are logically sound, evidentially grounded and strategically persuasive.
  • 03Identify and mitigate the principal cognitive biases, including overconfidence, escalation of commitment and authority bias, that undermine independent judgement in senior governance settings.
  • 04Design a persuasion strategy that anticipates board scepticism, addresses dissenting perspectives and sequences evidence to maximise credibility and consent.
  • 05Evaluate their own boardroom communication habits and develop a personal development plan to strengthen their influence at executive and non-executive level.
