Lesson 6 of 6

First Conditional

You will be able to talk about real and likely situations at work and what will happen if a condition is met.

Part 1: Overview and Explanation

Definition and Core Meaning

The First Conditional uses if plus the Present Simple in the if clause and will plus the base verb in the main clause. It describes a real, possible situation in the future and what will happen as a result.

When to Use It

  • Real future possibilities

If the client approves the budget, we will start the project next month.

  • Likely work outcomes

If Sarah finishes the report on time, the manager will be happy.

  • Conditional promises or offers

If you need help with the spreadsheet, I will send you the template.

  • Warnings or consequences

If we do not order the supplies today, they will not arrive before Friday.

  • Planning for work situations

If the meeting ends early, we will have time to check the emails.

Part 2: Conjugation and Practice

Conjugation Box

Positive
If + Subject + Present Simple, Subject + will + base verb

If the team arrives on time, we will have the meeting at two o'clock.

Negative
If + Subject + do not / does not + base verb, Subject + will + base verb

If the invoice does not arrive, I will call the supplier.

Question
Will + Subject + base verb + if + Subject + Present Simple?

Will you attend the conference if the company pays for the train?

Negative Question
Will + Subject + not + base verb + if + Subject + do not / does not + base verb?

Will you not be upset if they do not give you the promotion?

Common mistake. Do not use will in the if clause. Write if the client will approve is wrong; write if the client approves instead. The if clause always uses the Present Simple, and only the main clause uses will.
