Lesson 3 of 6

Future Continuous

You will be able to describe actions that will be in progress at a specific time in the future, and use the structure to make polite enquiries about other people's plans.

Part 1: Overview and Explanation

Definition and Core Meaning

The Future Continuous is formed with will be plus the present participle (-ing form). It describes an action that will be in progress at a particular moment in the future, or an action that will happen as part of a routine or planned schedule. This tense is also used for polite questions about what someone will be doing.

When to Use It

  • Action in progress at a specific future time

At 2 p.m. tomorrow, Sarah will be presenting the quarterly results to the shareholders.

  • Describing a future routine or schedule

James will be working from the Manchester office every Tuesday next month.

  • Polite enquiry about someone else's plans

Will you be attending the supplier conference in Leeds next week?

  • Two overlapping actions in the future

While the team will be recruiting new staff, the budget committee will be reviewing costs.

  • Expected activity that may be interrupted

The client will be waiting for our response when the report is ready.

Conjugation Box

Positive
Subject + will + be + verb-ing

The finance team will be reviewing the quarterly results all morning.

Negative
Subject + will + not + be + verb-ing

Emma will not be attending the launch event because she is on holiday.

Short form: Emma won't be attending the launch event because she is on holiday.

Question
Will + Subject + be + verb-ing?

Will you be negotiating with the supplier next Friday?

Negative Question
Will + Subject + not + be + verb-ing?

Will the team not be working on the project during the Easter break?

Short form: Won't the team be working on the project during the Easter break?

Common mistake. Learners often confuse the Future Continuous with the Present Continuous or with going to. Remember: the Future Continuous describes something that will be in progress at a future time (will be working), not a decision you have already made (am going to work) or something you are doing now (am working). Use will be plus -ing for actions in progress at a specific future moment.
