The original position imagines a perspective no one has actually occupied.
The value of such exercises lies in their capacity to isolate relevant variables. Real situations involve many factors that may confuse moral or conceptual analysis. Imaginary scenarios can strip away complicating features to reveal the principles at work. They provide controlled conditions analogous to laboratory experiments in science.
Thought experiments also reveal what we are committed to believing.
