When should we accept claims because experts endorse them? The appeal to authority occupies an ambiguous position in reasoning. On one hand, we cannot verify everything ourselves and must rely on experts for much of what we believe. On the other hand, mere authority does not make claims true, and appeals to authority can be used to manipulate. Understanding when deference to authority is warranted helps navigate this tension.
The fallacious appeal to authority involves citing an authority who lacks relevant expertise or whose expertise does not extend to the claim in question. A famous athlete endorsing a financial product provides no evidence for its quality. A scientist speaking outside their field may be no more reliable than any educated person. Authority that does not match the claim provides no real support.
Legitimate appeals to authority involve experts whose training, experience, and demonstrated competence qualify them to assess the claims in question. When medical consensus holds that vaccines are safe, this provides strong evidence because the experts have relevant qualifications and their agreement emerges from appropriate methods. Deference here is not fallacious but rational.
Several factors affect the strength of legitimate authority appeals. The degree of consensus among qualified experts matters: unanimous agreement provides stronger support than bare majorities. The track record of experts in the domain matters: fields with histories of accurate prediction deserve more confidence. The presence or absence of conflicting interests matters: experts with stakes in particular conclusions warrant more scrutiny.
