How can we benefit from failure without actually failing? The pre-mortem technique, developed by Gary Klein, uses prospective hindsight to anticipate what could go wrong before it does. Rather than waiting for failure and conducting a post-mortem to understand causes, we imagine failure has occurred and work backward to identify likely causes.

The procedure is simple. Before beginning a project or making a major decision, imagine that it has failed spectacularly. Now explain what caused the failure. This imaginative exercise surfaces risks that standard planning may overlook.

Why does the pre-mortem work better than simply asking what might go wrong? The shift in framing matters psychologically.
